39 stripes represent the 39 lashes Jesus most likely took.
Historically and biblically, there doesn’t seem to be a direct answer to how many times Jesus was scourged. But what we do know is that, according to Deuteronomy, it was Jewish tradition for a criminal to receive no more than 40 lashes, so they’d typically administer 39 to avoid accidentally going over. Paul reiterated this in 2 Corinthians. The only reason to doubt that it was 39 lashes is because Jesus punishment was administered by the Romans, not the Jews, and there’s no clear reason to believe that the Romans followed Jewish tradition in this way.
But whether or not it was 39, 49, or any other number is of little consequence, at least to me. No matter how many, it’s by those stripes we are healed.
He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 NKJV).
Jesus took that for me, for you. He took on that and so much more. He took on sin, yes, and death… but He also took on perfection. So whether is was 39, more, or less, the only thing that concerns me is what they were for. They were for healing.
